From The Head Of Foreign Languages Unit

The courses offered by Degree English Unit to Doğuş University students can be broadly divided into three categories; advanced English courses, general English courses, English for Specific Purposes courses.

Advanced English courses, specifically designed to fulfil the academic needs of our students studying in the programs and the departments in which the medium of instruction is English, aim at helping them acquire language skills necessary for their academic and professional life. The purpose of Advanced English courses is to provide intensive work in analytical reading and writing with additional work on grammar and vocabulary, particularly the most useful and frequently-used academic and technical words which they will come across in their academic textbooks, scientific articles and lectures. These courses are intended to develop students' ability to think critically, to organize and synthesize information, and to write analytical essays. In addition to this, they concentrate on developing the skills of paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting which students use in their research and writing process. The students who complete these courses will acquire the appropriate skills necessary for their academic and professional life such as writing projects and delivering presentations.

General English courses, which are offered to students studying in the departments in which the medium of instruction is Turkish, provide an introduction to the English language, and aim to teach basic grammar, vocabulary and conversation strategies for everyday interaction. Students taking these courses can communicate both in spoken and written English and express themselves accurately and fluently in everyday situations.

What is more, English for Specific Purposes courses, most of which are designed as university elective courses and offered to students studying in the departments in which the medium of instruction is Turkish, focus on developing communicative competence in a specific field as well as the functional language they will need in their daily working lives. The goal of ESP courses is to enhance students' spoken and written communication skills in English in order to prepare them for professional life.

As the Degree English Unit, our objective is to help our students improve their English and to use it effectively so that they may stand out in their social, cultural and professional life. Also, through the introduction and practice of effective language learning techniques and methods, students are trained to become autonomous language learners who can work on the improvement of their language skills outside the class.
